How it works
Every artwork comes from an algorithm. Those of the catalogue fall into thirteen families, with one page per family.
-
The golden ratio Each point is placed after the previous one, with the same rotation. Everything depends on that angle.
-
Escape-time fractals A pixel's colour tells how many rounds it took for the calculation to run away.
-
Rewriting (L-systems) The text is rewritten several times, then each letter becomes a stroke or a turn.
-
The chaos game The image is drawn point by point, never traced in one go.
-
Geometric recursion One rule applied to each piece, then to the pieces of the pieces.
-
Strange attractors The same equation is repeated thousands of times and the trail of the point is kept.
-
Local rules Nobody draws the pattern: it appears step by step.
-
Agents and growth Each one only knows its surroundings. The shape comes from their number.
-
Flow fields The field is a map of currents. The strokes are the paths.
-
Waves and interference Where two crests meet, the light rises. Where a crest meets a trough, it falls.
-
Kaleidoscopes Only one sector is drawn, the rest is symmetry.
-
Flowing matter The material is not drawn, it is given rules of behaviour.
-
String art No thread is curved. The curve is what all the threads draw together.
