What is the Mandelbrot set?
A formula that fits on a postage stamp. You take a point, compute z² + c over and over, and watch whether the result runs off to infinity or stays put. The points that stay put form the set, that famous black outline. The colours around it are how fast each point escapes. Benoit Mandelbrot put a name to it in 1980, and we've never tired of it since: the deeper you zoom into the edge, the more detail there is, truly to infinity.
How are these prints generated?
Every work starts from a seed. That seed fixes exactly where we dive into the fractal and which palette we use, and the same seed always produces exactly the same image, here and everywhere else. Nothing is painted by hand, nothing is retouched: the algorithm computes, the render lands. The seed and parameters are frozen into a fingerprint, so the work can't exist twice. That fingerprint is then signed with a cryptographic key (Ed25519), and the certificate that comes with your print can be verified by anyone, without going through us.
Why a print, not just a wallpaper?
Because a Mandelbrot is meant to be seen big. The detail is everywhere, right down to the finest filaments, and a small screen crushes it. We print at 300 DPI on fine art paper, in several formats. Every print is numbered and ships with its signed certificate. Once an edition sells out, it's gone for good: the work doesn't go back into production.
